Why Machines That Bend Are Better

  • Compliant mechanisms have lots of advantages over traditional devices. SimpliSafe is awesome security. It's really effective, easy to use, and the price is great. Check out SimpliSafe here: simplisafe.com/veritasium
I visited the Compliant Mechanisms Research group at Brigham Young University and spoke to Professor Larry Howell:
At the above link, you can download 3D-print files to make some of the objects in the video, plus learn more about compliant mechanisms.
What I learned about compliant mechanisms I summarize in the 8 P's of compliant mechanisms:
    1. Part count (reduced by having flexible parts instead of springs, hinges)
    2. Productions processes (many, new, different enabled by compliant designs)
    3. Price (reduced by fewer parts and different production processes)
    4. Precise Motion (no backlash, less wear, friction)
    5. Performance (no outgassing, doesn't require lubricant)
    6. Proportions (reduced through different production processes)
    7. Portability (lightweight due to simpler, reduced part count designs)
    8. Predictability (devices are reliable over a long period of time)

Very commonly used on cheaper musical keyboards, replacing the separate hinge and spring found in the traditional mechanical design. In this case each octave can be molded as two seperate black vs. white key assemblies.

  • E_M_E_T
    E_M_E_T 13 саат мурун

I never had any doubt about the performance and simplicity of these mechanisms, but I was always very skeptical about their durability. Take the titanium hinge, for example. I was impressed by the durability of the plastic grabber, but metals are a completely different story. Metals bend and permanently keep their new metallic shape. How many times can that hinge go from -90 to 90 and back until the metallic bonding of the titanium permanently breaks down? More importantly, how does one test its strength once it is in use? I don't want to see that hinge used on an important satellite in outer orbit if we have no way of making sure it is properly maintained. Machines with separate parts show symptoms of particular pieces becoming worn out, but a mechanism made up of only one piece doesn't.

These devices are great catalyst for thinking about new ways to do things. However my problem with these devices they have very low cyclical
Properties. Ie built in failure rate for things such as switches in automobile windows. Ford, GM, and Chrysler want things to fail in a timely manor.
After all if they lasted for ever who would buy replacements?
Especially for consumers items. For a one time device like a nuclear bomb I am all in.
Seeing this video reminds me of the wizard of OZ movie! They want you to see one thing but not what it really is.
